Beware the full moon! Tales of strange creatures in the night have always haunted our imaginations, and in the province of Quebec, the loup-garou werewolf is one of the most famous legends of all. Werewolf sightings may date back to the age of New France, but in July 1767, an article in the Gazette de Québec cautioned the public to be on the look-out for a loup-garou in the guise of a beggar. This awe-inspiring creature now glowers fiercely from the face of a bullion coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint: the second in the Creatures of the North series celebrating the fantastic and mysterious creatures of Canada’s seas, lands and skies.
This coin is composed of 99.99% fine silver, and retains a face-value of $10. The reverse of the coin features a fierce werewolf in front of a forest with the full moon in the sky along with the metal weight, purity, and country of issue. The level of detail in the engraving of this coin is a testament to the craftsmanship of the Royal Canadian Mint; the obverse displays the effigy of her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Also featured above the effigy, is the year of issue, her title, and the $10 denominational value. Once again radial lines feature throughout the obverses field. With a 38 mm diameter, this unusually thick coin is a pleasure to hold, lending a feeling of quality and substance.
