This coin is part of the Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle series by the Perth Mint, and the first design by John M. Mercanti (issued in 2014 and 2015 only).

The spectacular Wedge-tailed Eagle comes to life on this 2oz gold proof high relief coin. This majestic bird can often be seen perched in trees and on rocks and cliffs, from where they have a clear view of their surroundings, enabling them to defend their territory and identify prey.

The coin’s reverse depicts an impressive Wedge-tailed Eagle in mid-flight as it prepares to land on a tree branch. For this design, The Perth Mint commissioned American sculptor and engraver, John M. Mercanti, the 12th chief engraver of the U.S. Mint. John Mercanti created the reverse design of the American Silver Eagle bullion coin and has produced more coin and medal designs than any other employee in the history of the U.S. Mint.

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA · 200 DOLLARS ·.

Around above left, the inscription AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE. Around below, the date of issue and the precious metal content: 2015 2oz 9999 GOLD (two troy ounces of 99.99% gold).
